Sunday morning, accompanied by giant champagne hangovers (erm, Jared), we went to the National Mall to be a part of the excitement of inaugural weekend. A large CNN station was erected right off of the Smithsonian metro stop with Andreson Cooper and Soledad O'Brien reporting on the inaugural festivities and hundreds of people stood around and watched, waiting to be on tv (ok...we did that too).
We walked up to the grounds of the Capitol Building to see the beautiful decor for the big day and the excitement from the crowds was palpable. Really. People were psyched. I love enthusiastic people!
We woke up at 4 a.m. on Sunday (Inauguration day) to stand in line at the White House where our ticketed seats for the parade were- thousands of guards/policemen/secret service men/and military personnel patrolled the city, while cement partitions, gates, and tour buses were used to herd the crowds to the secure areas. It felt like a Batman villain was about to attack the city.
After waiting for roughly 10 hours in the 30 degree weather, the parade finally started. And we got to see the President and the First Lady. And it was COMPLETELY AMAZING. They are so much more beautiful and youthful in person!! They were just gleaming! I love them. Also, the crowd we sat with were the bee's knees. It was a once in a lifetime experience; so exciting and emotional.
But. I'm glad it's over. And I'm ready for all of the tourists that have descended upon us to leave. PLEASE LEAVE.
Now we're just going to eat chili and stay inside for days on end.
Many Huzzahs,
Janice & Jared
